Description of Anina (2013):

Anina Yatay Salas is a ten-year-old girl who does not like her name. Each part is a palindrome, which means it reads the same both forwards and backwards. Her schoolmates are always teasing her about this, especially Anina's arch-enemy Yisel, who Anina sees as an "elephant". One day, Anina and Yisel get into a playground skirmish, so the school principal disciplines them with a weird punishment: they are both given a sealed black envelope which they are not allowed to open for an entire week. Haunted by nightmares and day-dreams, Anina in her anxiousness to find out what horrible punishment awaits her, will get mixed up in a series of adventures, involving secret loves, close friendships and dreadful enemies. A movie about a 14 year old girl who decides she wants a boyfriend, because her best friend always seems happy with hers, and pursues an older guy. We follow her throughout the film, and watch her thought pattern, decision making, and emotions.I...am not sure on this one. I watched it about a week ago at Sundance 13 and every time I think about it, I can't decide if I liked it. The production of the movie felt fine. It didn't feel poorly made, and the actors all played their characters pretty well, however, the main character didn't seem to ever show emotions. The movie definitely stirred up some weird feelings inside of me, and wasn't all that comfortable to sit through at parts.All in all, I'd probably not suggest it.

"Au bout du conte" is another enchanting, funny, intelligent, gem among those written, acted, and in case of Jaoui, also directed, by the fantastic duo Agnes Jaoui/Jean-Pierre Bacri who also prove once again to be some of the best comedy dialogue writers in the world. Using the modern fairytale canon, and filling the storyline with references to classic fairy tales elements, the movie travels through the illusions, fears, hopes we can't live without, from waiting for a Prince charming to big and little forms of superstitions. All the cast is very good, but especially the scenes with Jaoui & Bacri together (those driving lessons are really unique) are extremely entertaining, touching and nuanced.
